Why Should I Study this Course?

The study of a modern foreign language will broaden your horizons, develop cultural knowledge and understanding and foster transferable skills such as confidence, communication, problem solving and creativity. A GCSE in a modern foreign language will also provide you with a solid foundation for future language study.

A GCSE in a modern foreign language will enable you to:

  • develop your ability to communicate confidently and coherently with native speakers in speech and writing

  • express and develop thoughts and ideas spontaneously and fluently

  • deepen your knowledge about how language works and enrich your vocabulary in order for you to increase your independent use and understanding of extended language in a wide range of contexts

  • acquire new knowledge, skills and ways of thinking through the ability to understand and respond to a rich range of authentic spoken and written material, including literary texts

  • develop awareness and understanding of the culture and identity of the countries and communities where the language is

What Will I be Doing in Lessons?

In lessons you will be extending your knowledge of KS3 topics and studying new areas. Topics will include:

  • Youth Culture

  • Lifestyle

  • Customs and Traditions

  • Home and Locality

  • The Wider World

  • Current Study and Future Plans.


These will be studied through listening, speaking, reading and writing tasks.

What Skills do I Need?

Good organisation is important as well as the confidence to contribute in the target language. A good memory may also help.

What Type of Assessment is it?

50% of the final grade is assessed at the end of the course through a listening and reading exam. 25% is assessed via a written exam. 25% is assessment by an oral exam consisting of role play, conversation and response to a photo.

What Post-16 College and Career Opportunities Could this Lead to?

AS and ‘A’ Level in Spanish. It is also a good course for students planning to study business, law or travel and tourism in the future. The ability to speak a second European language also looks very good to a potential employer on your CV!
