An opportunity to learn and further develop practical skills on this new course. To research areas of study for coursework. The practical work and knowledge learnt during the course will provide valuable life skills. Develop creative abilities and problem solving skills, experiment with food ingredients and develop your own recipes.
Learning and applying good hygiene and safety practices in practical lesson. Developing an understanding of the processes and equipment linked to various jobs within the food industry. Linking nutritional information to food preparation, experimenting with food ingredients and learning about how food is produced.
Practical, listening, communication and organisational skills.
Unit 1: Principles of Food and Nutrition 1 hour 30 minute exam. 40% of the qualification – food commodities, principles of nutrition, diet and good health, the science of food, where food comes from, cooking and food preparation.
Unit 2: Food and Nutrition in Action. Two assignments (10hrs), 2000-2500 word food investigation (40 marks). Plus one 15hr design and make task including a 3hr practical. Cook a three course menu.
Catering courses can be followed at Cross Keys College. The course is also suitable for pupils interested in a range of careers within the Hospitality and Catering area.
